But, to widen your audience, maximise your profits and reach your potential you’ll probably want to expand your offering into the online arena at some point too. It might seem like a complex thing to wrap your head around, maybe you wouldn’t consider yourself a tech boffin, or perhaps you even feel out of your depth, but don’t worry, we’ll hold your hand through the process.

One of the most important elements to running a successful business is keeping up to speed with the ever-changing needs and wants of consumers, and that’s not restricted to trends, tastes and fashions but your payment systems too. Not only do customers want convenience and the latest payment options, they expect them, and for some shoppers, a lack of choice is enough to turn them away full stop.

Times are changing, technology is rapidly evolving, and consumers continue to adapt the way they pay for goods and services and adopt the latest ways to pay. We’re all familiar with the old-school tills of yesteryear, that memorable ‘ding’ when the cash register opened, the shop assistant manually inputting the price of each item sold, and some of you might even remember a time when tills were cash only. Credit and debit cards, and by association card machines, are so pervasive it’s hard to imagine life without them. But in the scheme of things, they haven’t been around for long. The first iterations were punched card readers, used during the early years of the computer industry to store information on computer systems. It wasn’t until 1978 that the First National Bank of Seattle issued the first debit card to business executives. Just 20 years later, debit cards had overtaken cheque usage all over the world.

If you run a restaurant you’ll know all too well there’s no such thing as a single payment point. Sometimes customers come to the till, others you go to their table. Sometimes they sit inside, others outside. Sometimes they pay by card, others by cash. It varies from customer-to-customer and day-to-day.

The credit surcharge ban came into play on 13th January 2018 and meant businesses could no longer add a surcharge to credit or debit card purchases anywhere in the European Economic Area (EEA). For anyone wanting to dig a little deeper into the fine print, the update was part of a new set of EU regulations called the European Payment Services Directive 2 - we’re about to break it down into human language here though.
