What is AVS security?
Address Verification Service, also known as AVS, is a security function that is used to prevent fraudulent transactions on any debit or credit card.
As the name suggests, Address Verification Service is based on the verification of the address of the card holder. AVS is used for non-face-to-face transactions by cross-referencing the cardholder’s numeric address elements with the card issuer’s records.
AVS is supported by Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
Some cardholders with a bank that does not support AVS may receive an error from Internet stores due to the lack of data available.
When should I use AVS security?
For maximum protection against card fraud, you should use all security functionality available to you.
For transactions via mail or telephone, also referred to as MOTO, and via a browser-based service called a Virtual Terminal, the AVS service is a vital tool as 3D security is not available for a MOTO transaction.
